Senesino (so nicknamed because he hails from the city of Siena) was one of Europe's most prominent castrati throughout the first half of the 18th century. From Porpora to Handel, from Naples to London, sulphurous, demanding and resentful, this "primo uomo" made headlines with his playing, his voice and his temperament. Along the way, he crossed paths with another rival, whom he admired just the same: Farinelli.
