Paris Opera at the Six n’étoiles “Platée”

Description

"Nymph reigning over a wet empire' or 'ridiculous naiad'? Who is this strange creature that Rameau makes sing in a countertenor tessitura and that shatters the conventions of opera?

Find out more

Ugly and vain, the frog Platée is the victim of a manipulation by the gods, who make her believe that she is loved by Jupiter. In this opera, composed for the wedding of the Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XV, and the infanta Maria Teresa of Spain, who was reputed to be ungainly, Jean-Philippe Rameau uses irony as the main weapon in his score. This cruel and moving farce returns to the Opéra in Laurent Pelly's delightful and whimsical production.
